Changklan Road: The Story of Chiang Mai's Night Bazaar Street (Our Home Street)

The Street That Never Really Closes

Every city has one street where its history and its present rub shoulders. In Chiang Mai, that street is Changklan Road. By day it is banks, hotels, offices (including our two), and noodle shops. By night it becomes the Night Bazaar, one of Thailand's oldest and most famous night markets, open every single evening of the year, rain or shine, high season or low.

Our offices at The Astra Condo and Astra Sky River are both on this road, so consider this a guide written from the front porch.

A Little History: Caravans Before Souvenirs

The Night Bazaar did not start as a tourist attraction. Changklan Road sits on the old trading route where Yunnanese caravan merchants from southern China stopped to trade goods on the long journey between Yunnan and the ports of Burma. For generations this stretch near the Ping River was where traders met, haggled, and moved on. When travelers started arriving in numbers in the twentieth century, the trading habit simply changed customers, and the modern Night Bazaar grew out of it. Selling things after dark on Changklan is not a gimmick here; it is the street's oldest tradition.

The Night Bazaar Today

Every evening from around 6 PM, the sidewalks fill with stalls: handicrafts, clothes, art, watches, wood carvings, phone gadgets, and the eternal elephant-print trousers. Around the street stalls you will find the bigger market compounds, each with its own personality:

• The Night Bazaar building and surrounding stalls, the classic browsing ground for souvenirs and crafts

• Kalare Night Bazaar, with a food court, live music, and a boxing ring that hosts Muay Thai fight nights

• Anusarn Market, the food heavyweight: seafood restaurants, street stalls, foot massage chairs, and the beloved evening cabaret show

Prices are rarely fixed, so haggle with a smile, and remember the first price is an invitation, not an insult.

Beyond the Stalls

Changklan rewards a slow wander. The Ping River and its riverside restaurants are a ten-minute walk east. Loi Kroh Road crosses at the northern end with its bars and massage shops. Street food clusters appear at the soi corners after dark, and some of the city's best foot massages happen in plastic chairs ten steps from the souvenir stalls, an after-shopping tradition we heartily endorse.

Our Corner of the Street

We are not neutral about Changklan Road, we work here every day. Both of our offices are on this street, which is also why our luggage storage sits exactly where travelers need it: steps from the Night Bazaar, minutes from the river, and a short ride from the airport. Drop your bags, browse the bazaar, catch a fight night or the cabaret, and collect them whenever suits you.
