Whitewater kayaking is a relatively new sport in Thailand, and Northern Thailand is well suited to it. During the rainy season, rivers tumble out of the tropical mountains of the region and offer some excellent whitewater. The daily kayaking trips and the kayak school run from a private camp and homestay on the Mae Taeng River.

The whitewater course has grade 3 and 4 rapids in a steep, forested valley north of Chiang Mai. In the rainy season, July to September, the river carries larger flows with big holes and waves. In the cool and dry season, October to March, the water is lower and the boating more technical, with steep sections, drops and moves to make, which gives the Mae Taeng a creeky feel that is good for building technical skills.

Pickup from your hotel is between 09:30 and 10:00, and the drive to the private river camp takes under two hours. The trips cater for both first-time and experienced paddlers, and a lesson can be tailored to your needs. Full instruction is given in basic, intermediate and advanced techniques, and groups are formed according to ability. The kayaks are imported, and the guides are certified, English-speaking rescue guides who give a full safety briefing before you get on the water.

Along the river you pass rolling hills, dense rainforest and local coffee fields, and in some stretches you may see elephants resting or walking along the riverbank. A healthy Thai buffet lunch is served by the water, and photos of the day are included. Drop-off at your hotel is between 17:00 and 18:00.
