Included

A relaxed full day out of Chiang Mai that combines an observation-based elephant visit with a gentle bamboo raft ride on the Mae Wang river. It suits families, first-time visitors to Thailand and anyone who wants time with elephants without riding, bathing or touching them. All fitness levels are welcome.

Pickup is between 08:00 and 08:30 from your accommodation. You drive about an hour and a half through rice fields, cornfields and banana plantations to Joy Elephant Sanctuary in Mae Wang, with the last ten minutes in a roofed 4x4 truck. Around 10:00 you change into traditional Karen clothing and hear a short briefing about the sanctuary and its elephants. Then you help prepare food and snacks and feed the elephants from a respectful distance, learning about their history and behaviour as you go. A local meal follows at 12:30. In the early afternoon you watch the elephants' daily routine, which may include foraging in the jungle, a bath with their mahouts or a wallow in the mud, with a cup of village herbal tea, then take a break at the waterfall and make a small Thai souvenir.

Around 14:00 you leave the sanctuary and drive about twenty minutes to the rafting point. Each bamboo raft has its own river guide who takes you downstream through forest on the Mae Wang river. The float usually takes around thirty minutes, a little more or less depending on the current, especially in the rainy season. Life vests are provided. You change into dry clothes and are back in Chiang Mai around 16:30.

Bring a swimsuit and clothes you do not mind getting wet, as the raft sits low in the water.

Bookings open up to 150 days ahead; the latest date you can book is Sun 28 Feb 2027.
