A long, full day that puts together two of the best reasons to leave Chiang Mai: a morning with the elephants of Joy Elephant Sanctuary and an afternoon in Doi Inthanon National Park, home to Thailand's highest peak. It suits active travellers who are happy with an early start and a moderate hike.

Pickup is between 06:30 and 07:00. The drive to the sanctuary in Mae Wang takes about an hour and a half, with the final ten minutes in a roofed 4x4 truck. From around 08:30 you change into traditional Karen clothing, hear a briefing about the elephants, then prepare food and snacks and feed them from a respectful distance. This is an observation-based visit: no riding, no bathing with the elephants and no touching. You drink village herbal tea while you watch the elephants' routine, take a break at the waterfall and make a small Thai souvenir. A local meal is served at 11:30 before you say goodbye to the elephants.

At noon you drive about 45 minutes into Doi Inthanon National Park. First comes the summit, where the air is cool and often misty, then the Twin Pagodas and their botanical garden. Around 15:00 you start the Pha Dok Siew nature trail: about an hour of walking that the sanctuary rates medium difficulty, past rice terraces and a waterfall to an organic Karen hill-tribe coffee farm. You leave the mountain around 17:30 and are back in Chiang Mai around 19:00. National park and pagoda entrance fees are included.

Wear shoes you can walk in and bring a warm jacket or hoodie: it is noticeably cooler on the mountain than in the city, especially from November to February.

Bookings open up to 150 days ahead; the latest date you can book is Sun 28 Feb 2027.
