Grandma's Home Cooking School is a family-run school on a small organic farm in Saraphi, south of Chiang Mai, and this is its half-day class. It suits families, first-time cooks and anyone who would rather cook among vegetable beds and chickens than in a city kitchen. There are morning, afternoon and evening sessions.

You are collected at your hotel and welcomed at the farm with a drink and a snack. The class starts with a walk through a local market, where your teacher introduces the vegetables, herbs and pastes of Thai cooking. Back at the farm you walk the organic garden, learning the herbs by smell and taste and collecting eggs from the chickens. Then you cook four dishes and a dessert: a soup, either tom yam or the coconut soup tom kha, pad thai, a green or red curry, and mango sticky rice, plus a Thai milk tea or lemon tea. Vegetarian and halal versions are available.

You eat what you cook and go home with an electronic recipe book. Free pickup and drop-off covers hotels within about 10 km of downtown Chiang Mai. The morning class runs 09:00 to 13:00 with pickup from 08:30; the afternoon class 12:00 to 16:00 with pickup from 11:30. Someone who wants to come along without cooking can join as a visitor for the tour and the meal.
