Chang Thai Heritage is a small elephant sanctuary in open countryside about an hour's drive from Chiang Mai. The half day Elephant Lover program is the shortest way to spend real time with the elephants: you prepare their food, feed them by hand and walk with them to the river for a bath. There is no riding. The sanctuary describes itself as a home rather than a camp, set up to raise young elephants without the use of a hook and run together with local people. It suits families with younger children, people short on time, and anyone who wants the elephant part of the day without a long walk.

The visit begins with a short introduction to the elephants and how to move around them. Then you chop sugar cane and bananas into snacks and feed the elephants, which is where most visitors spend the longest. After that comes a mud bath, and then you walk with them down to the river. The elephants lie down in the water and you scrub them with a brush while the mahouts stay right beside you. Visitors also describe making a natural soap from a local tree before the bath.

Practicalities: the whole trip, including the drive each way, takes around six hours. You will get wet and muddy, so wear clothes you do not mind ruining and bring a change. The child rate applies from age 3 to 10. Our office confirms your pickup time when you book.

Bookings open up to 150 days ahead; the latest date you can book is Sun 28 Feb 2027.
