The morning session at Joy Elephant Sanctuary is the most popular way to visit: an early start, the cool part of the day with the elephants, and you are back in Chiang Mai by early afternoon with the rest of the day free. It suits families, solo travellers and anyone who wants an observation-based elephant visit without riding or bathing.

Pickup is early from your Chiang Mai accommodation. The drive to Mae Wang takes about an hour and a half in an air-conditioned van through rice fields and banana plantations, with the last ten minutes in a roofed 4x4 truck. On arrival you change into traditional Karen clothing and your guide explains the sanctuary's work and introduces its small group of rescued female elephants. You help prepare food and snacks and feed the elephants from a safe distance, learning about their history and habits as you go. There is no riding, no bathing with the elephants and no forced contact. With a cup of village herbal tea you watch them in the forest, then take a break at the waterfall (bring a swimsuit if you want to get in; the elephants do not bathe there) and make a small Thai souvenir. A local meal is included before the drive back.

The sanctuary runs all year round, in rain as well as sun, and limits the number of visitors each day. Vegetarian and vegan meals are available with notice, and there is a child rate for ages 4 to 9.

Bookings open up to 150 days ahead; the latest date you can book is Sun 28 Feb 2027.
