The afternoon session at Joy Elephant Sanctuary is the one to pick if you would rather not get up early, or if you want to keep the morning free for the city. It gives you the same core visit as the morning session: food preparation, feeding, observation, waterfall and a small craft activity, in a group the sanctuary keeps deliberately small.

Pickup is around midday from your Chiang Mai accommodation. The drive to Mae Wang takes about an hour and a half through rice fields and banana plantations, with the last ten minutes in a roofed 4x4 truck. On arrival you change into traditional Karen clothing and your guide tells you about the sanctuary and its small group of rescued female elephants. You then help prepare food and snacks and feed the elephants from a safe distance. This is an observation-based sanctuary: there is no riding, no bathing with the elephants and no forced contact. You sip village herbal tea while watching them in the forest, take a break at the waterfall (bring a swimsuit if you want to get in; the elephants do not bathe there) and make a small Thai souvenir to take home. A local meal is served around 17:00 before the drive back, and you are dropped at your accommodation in the early evening.

The sanctuary runs all year round, in rain as well as sun. Vegetarian and vegan meals are available with notice, and there is a child rate for ages 4 to 9.

Bookings open up to 150 days ahead; the latest date you can book is Sun 28 Feb 2027.
