Where does the pickup start and how long is the drive?

Pickup is from hotels in Chiang Mai city. The camp sits in the Mae Taeng valley about an hour north of town, so allow around 60 to 90 minutes each way.

Do I need experience to drive the ATV?

No. The quads are automatic with a thumb throttle, and you get a briefing and a practice run. Two hours does need some stamina, so eat breakfast and drink water.

Families do this trip and children join the rafting in the calmer months. For the ATV, younger children normally ride as a passenger rather than drive. Tell the office the ages when you book so the supplier can confirm.

How rough is the rafting?

The 4 km run is the gentlest on the river. From about January to March it is a splashy float; in August and September the water is high and the rapids are strong.

What happens if it rains?

Rain does not cancel the day. Higher water actually makes the rafting more lively. Bring a light rain jacket and keep your phone in a dry bag.

A full day that leans towards the ATVs: two hours on the trails and then a 4 km rafting run to cool off. It suits people who enjoy driving and want a longer ride than the usual one hour, with a manageable river section at the end. The whole day happens at the family-run camp at Kaeng Kued on the Mae Taeng river, about an hour north of Chiang Mai.

After hotel pickup and the drive out, you get a briefing and a practice loop on the automatic ATVs, which use a thumb throttle and need no licence or experience. Two hours on the trail is enough to go further into the valley than the short ride: forest tracks, muddy or dusty sections depending on the season, rocky climbs and long stretches along the riverbank, all at a pace the guide sets for the group. Lunch is at the camp. In the afternoon the rafting guides fit you with a life jacket and helmet, explain the paddle commands and drive you upstream. The 4 km run back takes about an hour and is the gentlest option on the river, a splashy float in the cool season and a lively ride in the rains. You return to Chiang Mai in the late afternoon.

Drinking water, insurance and an English-speaking guide are included. Bring a full change of clothes and shoes that can get muddy and wet.
