Yi Peng is the night Chiang Mai fills the sky with light. At the Lanna Lantern Festival you release three sky lanterns of your own from a ceremony ground at Doi Saket, a short drive north-east of the city, after an evening of Lanna culture: a candle-lighting ceremony, hill tribe and Lanna dance performances, the Victory Drum, a Muay Thai demonstration and a visit to a temple with a thousand-year-old golden pagoda. The evening ends with the lantern release and a fireworks display.

The festival runs on two evenings. Pick your date when you book; the programme is the same on both.

How the evening unfolds

Meet the festival team at the main gate of Wat Phra Singh in the Old City between 4:00 PM and 4:30 PM (16:00-16:30). The transfer takes you to Wat Phra That Doi Saket, the hilltop temple with the great golden Buddha north-east of the city, where you receive your souvenir and meal box (food, fresh fruit and bottled water) and have time for the sacred temple tour and the panoramic viewpoint before dark.

From 6:30 PM (18:30) the performances begin: the traditional Phang Pratheep candle lighting, five hill tribe cultural shows, the Lanna Victory Drum (Klong Sabad Chai), a Muay Thai performance and the elegant Fon Leb nail dance. Around 7:20 PM (19:20) the lanterns are handed out and everyone gathers on the ceremony ground.

At 8:00 PM (20:00) the lanterns rise together, followed by the grand fireworks display. The return transfer leaves between 8:30 PM and 9:00 PM (20:30-21:00) and drops you back at Wat Phra Singh.
